Senate Votes to Improve Protections for Drinking Water, Soil, and Land

Environmental Working Group issued the following statement on the passage of Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ R-Ga., amendment to relink conservation compliance to crop insurance premium subsidies.

“Thanks to the leadership of Sen. Chambliss, the Senate has reaffirmed the quid pro quo between farmers and taxpayers that has protected soil, water and wetlands since 1985. This common sense measure is needed now more than ever at a time when high crop prices are placing unprecedented pressure on our soil, water and wildlife habitat and bloated insurance subsidies produce powerful incentives to plow up marginal lands,” said Craig Cox, senior vice president of agriculture and natural resources at EWG.
