Obama Energy Plan Threatens Air, Land, Water

Washington, D.C. – President Obama’s State of the Union message calling for accelerating natural gas production, is “a serious threat to our air, land and water,” Environmental Working Group president Ken Cook said today.

“President Obama has done more than any other president to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat the looming global warming crisis,” Cook said. “However, his embrace of hydraulic fracturing to ramp up natural gas drilling is a misguided approach that will further pollute our drinking water and air.”

“As President Obama continues to pursue his ‘all of the above’ strategy for energy independence, I hope he seriously reconsiders his decision to encourage the risky practice of fracking, and, instead, invests more resources and presidential capital into an energy policy that is truly renewable,” Cook said.

He added:

“In light of the recent chemical spill in West Virginia, President Obama missed a real opportunity to address the need to overhaul the weak, outdated Toxic Substances Control Act.  The president’s failure to address the serious flaws of these broken policies is a step backward.  Until Congress passes a responsible, modern chemicals reform law, Americans may suffer more hazardous – and absolutely preventable -- chemical spills.”
