Senator Helps to Protect Our Food

Washington, D.C. – Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) stripped a controversial rider that would have given Monsanto and other agrichemical companies a backdoor approval for genetically engineered (GE) crops, Environmental Working Group said in a statement.

Ken Cook, EWG’s president, said:

The Monsanto rider would have set a dangerous precedent by stripping federal courts of their authority to approve GE crops. In other words, big agrichemical companies would be allowed to continue to grow food without proper government reviews.

Thankfully, Sen. Mikulski understands how outrageous it would be if we allowed this to happen and has excluded it from the continuing resolution spending bill.  EWG thanks the senator for fighting to protect our food and for closing this backdoor approval for GE crops.
