Summary

Very little is known about the long-term toxic effects of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). In humans, CPC can cause skin irritation and lesions, eye irritation, allergic response. High doses can cause nausea, vomiting, collapse, convulsions and coma. Short-term exposures to laboratory animals are known to cause eye lesions, skin and respiratory irritation (BIBRA 1988, HSDB 2002, Lin and Hemming 1996, Lin, et al. 1991, Monti, et al. 2002), neurotoxicity, and possible liver and kidney toxicity (BIBRA 1988). In addition, CPC has been shown to cause decreased levels of the enzyme cholinesterase in red blood cells, the same effect caused by organophosphate insecticides (HSDB 2002).




Cetylpyridinium chloride monohydrate

Pesticide, antibacterial agent; causes skin irritation, lesions, eye irritation, allergy; in animals, linked also to respiratory irritation, neurotoxicity.
