Summary
Volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs) are broad classes of chemicals that include xylene, benzene, toluene, PCE, and others. Some are very toxic, and some are linked to cancer. Little to no toxicity information is available for many of these compounds. VOCs and SVOCs are used in a wide range of industrial processes and consumer products, including paints and varnishes, paint stripping products, film developing, gasoline, and glue. People can be exposed to these chemicals from air or from contaminated tap water. Common symptoms of exposure in humans are eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation, headaches, dizziness, fatigue (Larsen, et al.1999). Among effects seen in studies of humans exposed to certain VOCs are cancer, kidney and liver damage, and birth defects. In laboratory animals, many of these chemicals cause toxicity to the liver, reproductive organs, thyroid and kidney. At higher doses, they can also decrease fertility and cause death.
