EWG’s Statement On House Consideration Of GMO Labeling Bill

Washington, D.C. – EWG President Ken Cook issued the following statement today in response to the House's consideration of the Roberts-Stabenow GMO labeling bill the House is expected to take up this week.

EWG does not support the Roberts-Stabenow GMO labeling proposal. While we support a national, mandatory GMO labeling system, we cannot support this proposal because food companies would be permitted to make a GMO disclosure through a means that is unavailable or unfamiliar to many Americans. While the proposal clearly intends to require a disclosure on more foods than are covered by state GMO labeling laws, we are concerned that loopholes could undermine Congress’ intent. We applaud Reps. DeFazio, McGovern, Welch, Huffman, Polis, Kuster, DeLauro, Blumenauer, Pingree, and others for standing with the nine-in-ten American consumers who simply want the same disclosure required in 64 other nations.
